DIGIPIN: India Post's New Digital Addressing System

Overview

On May 27, 2025, DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number), a new digital addressing system from India Post, was launched in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, ISRO, and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). DIGIPIN, unique to India, increases service delivery efficiencies by providing a precise, geo-coded address to every resident and business in India. Where the traditional six-digit PIN code system covers average areas of 170 sq. km., the DIGIPIN system provides a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every 4x4 meter grid in India, both urban, rural, and marine alike.

This project supports and aligns with the National Geospatial Policy 2022 and provides digital governance delivery, enhances e-commerce, logistics, and emergency service delivery, and allows for much more exact locating.

Benefits of DIGIPIN

  • Accuracy: Identifies precise location within a 4-meter square grid utilizing latitude and longitude coordinates, eliminating errors from imprecise and duplicate addresses.

  • Efficiency: Improves last-mile delivery for e-commerce companies, couriers and logistic providers by efficient routing.
  • Inclusiveness: Connects remote and rural locations with unstructured addresses to critical services like welfare programs and emergency services.
  • Privacy: No private information is stored—only geographic position is encoded to enable safe use.
  • Open-source: Developers can integrate DIGIPIN into apps and platforms and all technical documentation is available on GitHub.
  • Versatility: Offline usage support, with UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) coordinates for professional applications such as GIS and urban planning.

How DIGIPIN Works for Consumers

DIGIPIN helps to revolutionize address management by assigning a digital and geo-verified code to each location. Consumers will be able to use this for:

  • E-commerce Deliveries - You can give the DIGIPIN to Amazon, Flipkart, etc. to receive timely and accurate deliveries in some of the most challenging cities and rural areas around the world.
  • Emergency Services - The Police, Ambulance or Fire Services can simply use the DIGIPIN to locate someone in the fastest and simplest way, potentially saving lives.
  • Navigation - Providing precise locations to friends, rideshare services, government or local authorities will now be simpler than ever.
  • Government Services - With DIGIPIN, any public service like Aadhaar Document delivery or welfare program access could utilize a formalised digital address.

How to Create a DIGIPIN

Consumers can generate their DIGIPIN via the official Know Your DIGIPIN portal. Follow these simple steps:

  • Allow Location: Allow the website to access your current GPS (Global Navigation Satellite System) location in order to capture your exact latitude and longitude. If you know the coordinates you can input them manually.
  • Generate DIGIPIN: The portal will create a unique 10-character alphanumeric code that reflects your location's 4x4 meter grid.
  • Store the code: Copy your new DIGIPIN to store for next use. It will always remain registered for that specific location.
Important Note: The Department of Posts is designing a mobile application to provide clients with another method of access for DIGIPIN generation.

How to Share a DIGIPIN

Sharing a DIGIPIN is as easy as sharing a phone number or email ID:

  • For Deliveries - In e-commerce or courier apps you enter a DIGIPIN into the address field.
  • For Emergency Services - You simply give (or text) the DIGIPIN to responders who will then use it for precise location ascertainment.
  • For Navigation - You provide the code to friends or ride-hailing services who will use it for their interests.
  • Offline Use - In the context of no internet use, a DIGIPIN is fixed to a place so can be off-line. Also, to make the delivery experience easier, India Post put the programming code on GitHub so you can retrieve or decode DIGIPINs without internet.

How DIGIPIN Works

  • Geo-Coded: Each DIGIPIN is based on its unique latitude and longitude coordinates. With the latest GIS tools and satellite data from ISRO’s NRSC, each location is mapped to a 4x4 meter grid.
  • Integration with Services: Businesses, government agencies, and developers can integrate DIGIPIN into their own systems to provide accurate addressing. An e-commerce website can then deploy this information in a manner that optimizes delivery routes. The technology can also be used by planners in relation to smart city infrastructure projects.
  • Not an Alternative to PIN Codes: DIGIPIN does not replace the existing PIN code system, it is simply an additional specification added to provide greater accuracy. While PIN codes specify a postal region, DIGIPIN specifies the location.
  • Feedback Mechanism: Users will always have an opportunity to provide feedback on both the "Know Your DIGIPIN" and "Know Your PIN Code" portals to help improve accuracy, which means the system is forced to evolve based on real-world information.

Recent Developments

Since its initial launch in May 2025, DIGIPIN has been gaining traction:

  • The DIGIPIN portal has been visited by more than 29,620 visitors with over 34,590+ people searching via Google, indicating public interest.
  • The system has been adopted by the Thematic Working Group on Address, under the National Geospatial Policy 2022, which promotes uptake across ministries and departments of state.
  • India Post welcomes the use and engagement of citizens, developers, and institutions to engage on the portals, and provides feedback to help build the systems' accuracy and use.

Conclusion

DIGIPIN is a progressive initiative aimed at modernizing the addressing infrastructure of India. By creating a clear, secure and open-source digital addressing system, it provides consumers, businesses and government agencies with the ability to geographically navigate and deliver services and goods, whether one is ordering on online platforms, calling emergency services, or planning urban development.
DIGIPIN will ensure you get exactly what you’re expecting every time by identifying your location - making crucial element of the digital public infrastructure of India.

Enjoy and Keep Updated 🙏🙏🙏
